The weather is finally nice out and when that happens, I like to open the windows, turn on the music and do some Spring Cleaning! Right now we are busy with so many activities and it’s hard to really do the detailed cleaning that I like to do, but you can still get a good clean with these spring cleaning tips when you’re short on time!
Get Organized
The first thing I like to do is head to Walmart and stock up on supplies. There’s nothing like gathering up brand new cleaning products to get you motivated to start cleaning the house. I stocked up on Viva, Cottonelle and Scott products from Walmart to help me get done cleaning – fast!
Before I start cleaning, I like to load up my cleaning caddy so I have all of my supplies in one place. It saves time if you don’t have to run back to the kitchen to get more of something when you’re moving throughout the house cleaning. In addition to my Viva® Big Roll Paper Towels, I also add some cleaning spray, gloves and a trash bag.
Start in the Busiest Rooms
It’s probably the messiest room which is why you want to give it a good, quick cleaning. For us, it’s our living room and kitchen. If those don’t get clean, you’ll feel like you didn’t accomplish anything. Here’s a few things I like to make sure gets done and it won’t take long:
In the Living Room:
- Throw away or put away any clutter – if it hasn’t been used in awhile, toss it! It’s actually wise to declutter first, so you’re not cleaning up around the clutter and then tossing.
- Wash windows
- Wipe the dust boards
- Vacuum and/or mop
- Dust any surfaces
In the Kitchen:
- Wipe down counters and cabinets
- Give the sink a good scrub
- Mop the floors
- Pull the trash can over to the fridge and freezer and clean it out
- Clean out any junk drawers
- Wash windows
I like to make sure that I’m armed with Viva® Vantage® or Viva® Towels. Both are just as good as using cloth – but even better, I think! Viva Vantage is my favorite to use in the kitchen and bathroom as it has a good scrubby texture. Viva Towels are my go-to for dusting surfaces and baseboards as they are super soft and smooth. But both are good for those tough cleaning jobs!
Bathrooms
The bathroom is my least favorite to clean so I like to get this done quick! I usually spray down the shower and tub with a cleaning spray and let it sit while I wipe down the rest of the surfaces. Then it’s time to mop the floor, scrub the toilet and scrub and rinse off the bath tub.
I like to make sure the bathroom is stocked too when I clean – Scott® 1000 bathroom tissue is something we have been using for years and I make sure our bathroom closet has plenty of it! It’s soft enough for you but strong enough to even wipe up a mess on the sink!
For my kids, I stock up with Cottonelle®. They love how soft it is and it’s been perfect for potty training my girls! No more messes in the bathroom!
Finishing Up
After you’ve cleaned through the busiest rooms, you can move on to the rest. While I’m working on the bathroom or my room, I have the kids going through their own rooms. A few times a year, I have them go through their toys and make a pile to donate. After that, I set a timer and have them pick up and put away as much as they can before the timer goes off. All three of my kids love that competitive part of cleaning up and you’ll love that the job is getting done quicker!
As you’re finishing up the rest of the house, make sure to only do one room at a time. It can get distracting if you go back and forth and it will take you longer. Make sure to not leave a room until you’ve got it tidied up – and again, if you haven’t used it in a year, toss it! In the past week, I’ve gotten rid of SIX trash bags of stuff to donate.
Light a Candle and Treat Yourself
When all else fails, light a candle! There’s been many times that I’ve lit a candle (clean linen or a lemon scent are my favorites!) and it just gets me in the mood to clean – 0r it makes guest THINK your house is clean!
When all of that Spring Cleaning is done, treat yourself! I like to bring some fresh flowers inside and place them in one of those busy rooms as a reminder of a job well done!

Oh yes, always bring a bag for trash (I just use a plastic bag from the store) because it is shocking how much trash is just lying around, and my family aren’t even particularly sloppy folks!

These tips are a must in my house for spring cleaning. I like to shop at Walmart too, for all of my cleaning supplies. I feel like I get the best price there.
