You’ve gone out and happened to find the perfect blouse. It is exactly your style and you think it will look great on you. Unfortunately, when you try it on at home it doesn’t quite look right. It’s not that the blouse looked different when it was in the store. It’s likely not working because it doesn’t coordinate well with the rest of your outfit.
To get your fashion working and achieve your own personal style, you need to coordinate your clothes together with accessories. From your shoes to your hat, it all needs to come together to form a coordinated outfit and look. In this article, I will go over some tips that will help you coordinate your outfits.
1 – Mix high and low pieces
When you think about how pieces are going to work together you have two choices. One is to think about color, but more importantly, you should be thinking about structure.
Having structure is going to work far better than just trying to coordinate colors. An example would be workout gear. A tracksuit is basically almost like a one-piece suit. It might have the right colors, but you aren’t going to look stylish in that. It’s monotonous besides other things.
Having some structure breaks up the monotony and adds a chic style. You can still coordinate colors but make sure that there is also some structure between the high pieces and low pieces like a shirt or pants. Coordinating material is also possible as long as you are adding structure like putting together a cashmere set.
Adding a belt can break up the monotony and add structure so feel free to work with accessories if the top and bottom are of the same structure. This works especially well if you are wearing a dress that is flowing or fluffy to break up the top and bottom.
2 – Add a third item
Three seems to be something of a magic number in a lot of ways. When it comes to coordinating your outfit it makes sense to have a third item to tie it all together. For instance, if you have a coordinated blouse and skirt, throw on an open-front sweater to bring something else to the party.
You can also accessorize the third item by wearing a scarf or adding a belt. It should either match or contrast colors where appropriate.
3 – Emphasize your waist
One of the ways to tie in the top and bottom of your outfit is to accentuate your waist between the two. This is especially important when you have some layers. If you don’t emphasize an aspect of your physique then you can end up looking boxy and frumpy.
Most of the time, this will be a belt as there aren’t many items that will go around your waist. However, a light silk scarf that is patterned can be tied around your waist and add even more flair than a belt could.
