The Joy a Dog Can Bring To A Family

11 years ago, before we had kids I had been trying to convince my husband we should get a dog. He wasn’t crazy about the idea and I had given up on it until one Saturday morning he woke up and said “Let’s go get a dog!”. We spent the day visiting several shelters and adoption events as we knew we wanted to rescue a dog. We saw a super cute mixed lab we were drawn to but we wanted to check one more place. We couldn’t stop thinking about that mixed lab though so we turned back around and that’s how we adopted 3 month old Zoey! Now she will be 12 years old this year and it’s hard to imagine life without her!

Zoey has brought so much joy to our lives – she makes us laugh and smile (okay, and sometimes frustrated!) and she’s so good with my three kids. She sometimes seems to sense our moods – if you’re sad, she will come to cuddle and she was always by my side each time I was pregnant protecting me. We were content as a one dog household…until one day my husband woke up again and wanted to get a second dog!

I had some serious reservations about adding a second dog to our household but I figured with 3 kids and 1 dog, how much crazier could it get? We visited one place and instantly fell in love with a chihuahua mix. We all loved him and said YES to adopting this 2 year old chihuahua! After a home visit, Chewie came home! I was so nervous on how he would get along with Zoey but they are the BEST pals! We are all so in love with him!

Having two dogs has been so good for all of us! We should have done this years ago because Zoey loves having a companion. Plus, the dogs have taught my kids a lot about responsibility. They all help let them outside and fill their water and food bowls. I can’t imagine our lives without them!
