The Voyages of Young Doctor Dolittle is based on the classic 1920’s children’s book series, the cast includes Jane Seymour (“Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman”), Jason Alexander (“Seinfeld”), Tim Curry (“Charlie’s Angels”) and Tom Kenny (“SpongeBob SquarePants”). John Dolittle loves animals just like his uncle, Doctor Dolittle. When John is warned that animals are in danger, he jumps into his uncle’s submarine to help. When he arrives at Dolittle Island, he learns that it has been taken over by Ramsey the Ram and his army of gorillas. With a little help from some new friends, John comes to the rescue and saves the island.
My family loved this film. It is classic Dr. Dolittle, but from the nephew’s point of view. The film included really funny scenes that made our whole family laugh. There are also really cute things too, such as a rhino wearing glasses (my kids thought this was particularly silly), a snail shaped submarine and an adorable pink and white panda with a big heart! The film’s animation is bright and colorful, especially for not being from a big animation company. The music is impressive and the amusing sounding voices are entertaining. It is also has very clever dialogue between the characters.
During the course of the film, John Dolittle makes friends and learns some important lessons along the way. It is a story of teamwork and friendship. The message is one of courage in the face of danger and also loyalty to others even when it comes at a cost to yourself. Although it was a longer children’s movie it held my children’s attention, even though they are young. It is now one of their favorites and I’m glad because it’s a story that you would actually want your kids to watch and learn from!
