** If you want to follow this on twitter – or plan on tweeting your post – please use hashtag: #letstalktoddler **
Toddler Talk Thursday was created as a place for moms and dads of toddlers to come together over a weekly topic and share ideas, go-to toys, or products. It is a great way to meet other parents of toddlers. Each week the topic will be different; we invite you to link up, share your weekly Toddler Talk!!
Each week the hosts will travel around to each blog to see what topic your suggest for the following week. If we choose your topic – you will be our featured blog.
Keep the GREAT suggestions coming. We have an on-going list we will choose from each week. Some topics are ones we have done in the past – but that doesn’t mean we won’t revisit them!!
In order to qualify for this you need to blog about this week’s topic, and follow the hosts. Please do not link up past posts or non-toddler talk posts.
And the end of your post – suggest a topic for next week.
Comments letting us know you are participating are always great too. If we choose your blog, we will link back to your post the following week.
This week’s featured Blog is Adventures in Abbyland who suggested This Week’s Topic:
Food Allergies
If your child doesn’t have food allergies, what do you to to make yourself aware of others? Do you have questions on how to support parents whose children do?
Hayden doesn’t have a food allergy, but I am starting to be very aware of it since he has started preschool. His classroom is a peanut and tree nut free classroom. When it’s Hayden’s turn to bring snacks in, I will have to make sure that whatever we bring in is store bought and nut free.
I can’t imagine how scary it is for your child to have a food allergy. There are some children who can suffer greatly just from coming into contact with nuts.
To me, it’s not worth endangering another child’s life, so I will be careful to never send Hayden to school with anything nuts in his lunch.
Does your child have a food allergy?

You know, I really need to pay attention to your upcoming topics. I could have written a great post on this!
As you know, Rylie has a tree nut allergy. The thing about food allergies that a lot of people don’t realize is that they are DEADLY. It isn’t like being allergic to a dog and you sneeze when you are around one. If Rylie ingests a cashew or a pistachio, she can die. Food allergies are very serious!
I wish all parents were as thoughtful as you are Melissa. But I will admit that before my own child was diagnosed with a food allergy (one of the scariest nights of my life, BTW), I didn’t really think too much about them in other children. Rylie is allergic to two nuts that aren’t in much, so that is good, but since products aren’t labeled with the individual nuts, we have to avoid anything with a “tree nut” warning on it. The biggest issue we have is birthday parties. ALL cakes purchased at bakeries come with these warnings. My good friends know about Rylie’s allergy and generally either bake their own cakes, or make her special cupcakes, but when we go to parties for kids at school, I always make cupcakes to bring for Rylie since I don’t know where the cake will be coming from. She can’t have any treats that parents bring to school, either, since everything has to be store bought.
When you have a child with a food allergy you have to be very diligent and read labels on EVERYTHING. We have gotten very used to this and it is second nature. I carry an epi-pen everywhere we go, but I hope I never have to use it.
Well I guess I should have just written my own blog post and linked it up. Sorry for the long comment. 😀
I wish there was a way to link up your comment! 😉
I have seen a lot of parents moan and complain about changing their eating habits, why should they have to do that, etc.
Well, if it means you’re not endangering a child’s life, I think it’s okay not to send your child to school with a peanut butter sandwich.
Is Rylie’s school good about not allowing treats, etc?
aww how is Hayden liking preschool? I think it is important for schools to educate. It is so scary when the Doctor explains your child could die from this you become very aware of your own child and other peoples also. Great comment Leanne.
