Welcome to the ninth week of Toddler Talk Thursday! Where Family and Life in Las Vegas, Crazy about my Baybah, and My Life as a Sippy Cup Mom talk all things Toddler! Thank you for your patience with last weeks “break”. As all of you know, sometimes life gets a little busy.
Toddler Talk Thursday was created as a place for moms and dads of toddlers to come together over a weekly topic and share ideas, go-to toys, or products. It is a great way to meet other bloggers of toddlers. Each week the topic will be different; we invite you to link up, share your weekly Toddler Talk!!
Each week the hosts will travel around to each blog that links up, and pick an idea, story, or picture they think was a great example of that weeks topic. In order to qualify for this you need to blog about this week’s topic, and follow the hosts. Comments letting us know you are participating are always great too. If we choose your blog, we will link back to your post the following week.
Our highlighted blogs this week are:
Love that Brock begs to paint everyday!
Love the idea to try and use yogurt as finger paints.
Love the Ivory Soap Painting
This week’s topic is Discipline.
We started time out with Hayden a little after he was 2 years old. Most of the time it was for things that were a danger to him or something he would repeatably do, like knock all the DVDs off the shelves, even after we told him no.
We used to put him in the crib, for 2 minutes (his age) but we stopped doing that after I read that you shouldn’t do time outs in bed because then they might associate something bad with his bed.
I bought a stool and put it in the corner of our empty dining room. He hit us for the first time about 3 months ago and after telling him no and explaining why he shouldn’t have done it, I put him in Time Out in the corner.
He LOVED it! He actually sat in the stool until we could tell him he could leave. He giggled and smiled the whole time.
I hate telling him no, because I feel when you say it over and over again, it just loses its meaning. I’ve started saying things like “Hot” and “Yucky”, but mainly I use distraction for him.
I will never forget the time I was outside with some family and Hayden started running across the yard and for the street. I knew yelling no wouldn’t do anything so I started yelling “Danger! Stop!”. My family laughed at me for yelling “Danger!” but you know what? It worked!
So I think I’ll continue to make sure to tell Hayden what he did was wrong and try the Time Out in the corner, but I think distraction works really well at his age.
Next weeks topic will be: Halloween – Post anything related to Toddlers and Halloween. Also we would love to hear from you what topics you would like featured on Toddler Talk.
Link Up Suggestions
1. We ask that you follow all three hosts. That way you can keep up to date on future Toddler Talks.
2. Please link up with the URL of your Toddler Talk post, so we are looking through other posts to find it.
3. Please grab the Toddler Talk Button and display it in your post or on your blog.
4. Stop in to other blogs that are linking up. Leave a meaningful comment if you visit, and follow if you would like.
5. This link up is for families that have toddlers. Raising a toddler can be fun, crazy, exciting, and exhausting. Sharing what works for you could give other families another way to do things.
6. Have Fun!
Please – Before you Link up – This is NOT A BLOG HOP!! IT IS A MEME FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS OF TODDLERS. If you aren’t going to post specific to this weeks topic, than don’t link up.
If people continue to treat this as a hop – we will no longer have a link up, and you will just need to leave a comment with a link to your post. I am sorry, but it just isn’t fair to those who actually do participate.

Hmm Maybe I will try Danger when he starts pulling on the TV cords…
Thank – and how cute is he in time out!
Lolo @ Crazy About My Baybah says
Oh my goodness, look how cute he is sitting in timeout. I like the idea of using other words then no, I am going to give that a try!
Belle's Butterfly says
He is to cute!
That's a good idea. Belle is only just turing one but she laughs every time we tell her no.

Hubby wanted to try timeouts in Little Rocker's crib, but I had heard it could cause them to associate their crib with something bad.
I don't know if I mentioned it in my post, but I try using works like "hot" and "yuck" rather than "no" and I've noticed that does work a lot better.

Thats a great idea! I kept telling Mugsy "NO! HOT!" but she wouldn't listen. One time when I had taken a pan out (and I was still holding it so there was nothing I could do) she reached out and touched the open door of the oven. She yelled/cried and I comforted her and kissed it away (it didn't even stay red for 5 minutes) but now she won't go near it! I guess she had to learn the hard way. She says "HOT! HOT!" and shakes her hand when we go near the stove now. My parents said I was the same way- I burned blisters on my hand 3 times on the Kerosene heater before I would believe them when they told me "HOT!" I guess it's just in some kids personality to have to see for themselves!
