While going through my three year old’s backpack, I came across a piece of paper advertising sports for preschoolers. I had to laugh, because at three years old, how much were they actually going to learn?
We were able to pick between soccer, t-ball or basketball. I’m pretty sure my shorty wasn’t going t even be able to reach any basketball hoops and I think with soccer it would be more like “herd ball”.
Looking into the idea of toddlers and sports more, it seems like the general consensus is that it’s all just for fun. Kids don’t develop the physical skills or attention span that they need for group sports until about 6 or 7 years of ages. Toddlers playing sports is just a great way for them to burn some energy, be around kids their own age and have fun! The only thing I’m worried about is coming across those parents {you know who I’m talking about!] who will try to be pushing their toddler farther than they should. I’ve already came across some parents like that at Hayden’s school.
But I think we are going to sign Hayden up for some “herd ball” and let him have fun!
Is your toddler involved in any sports?

Not yet – but my husband has already bought both boys little lacrosse sticks, so it’s only a matter of time!

not yet, but my little man wants to play soccer and this coming fall he’ll be old enough.
Little miss will be old enough for dance classes in the fall, so if she wants to I will sign her up for that or tumbling, or whatever she wants to.

we were thinking of putting my 4 year old into soccer this spring but after reading that they don’t actually develop the skills til 6-7 I think we’ll just stick to the ymca sports classes. You can always get a soccer playdate going at the local park, thats what we did last year.
