As you are all aware, one of our favorite topics is traveling with children. Today, let’s talk about hiking… Hiking with kids is a nice way to get them connected to the outdoors from a young age. Many of us or rather we all know well that hiking with children brings a lot of challenges, but even so we`re usually doing our best to make such camping enjoyable. However, it can still be intimidating or even a bit stressful for parents.
We want to help all the parents who are planning to get their children out on the trail this summer. Here are 10 must haves for hiking with children that not only help to make your trip comfy but also make it really fun!
- First Aid Kits and Supplies
A grade-schooler, as well as an infant or a toddler luggage set, must be staffed with basic first aid kits and supplies for hiking. It is absolutely vital for family adventures. You can buy a ready-made First Aid Kit or create your own. But remember, any First Aid Kit should include acetaminophen, antihistamine, bandages, gauze, alcohol prep pads, splints, and ice packs. Take it a step further and take CPR classes to be extremely prepared for any situation.
- Insect Repellent
Be ready to protect yourself and your children from different insects during a hiking tour. Make sure you bring the best insect repellent because, without it, your hiking could be over very quickly!
- Sun Protection
Before you start your hike, put all necessary things that help you save your children from the sun: sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, and even lip balm.
- Right Hiking Shoes
Having the right hiking shoes for children is very helpful and can really facilitate your trip. Don’t allow them to wear their new shoes when you go hiking. Instead, they should get an old pair of shoes and you should also pack spare footwear for your kids, just in case. The best option will be a pair of well-fitting hiking shoes, running shoes for half marathon or good hiking sandals.
- Lots of Food and Water
If you`re hiking with your kids, you`ll always need more food and water (never take soda!). Pack as much water for your children as you pack for yourself. Pack also lots of light snacks like protein bars, nuts, chocolate nut protein balls, fruit and, of course, peanut butter sandwiches.
- Appropriate Clothes
The best clothes for hiking are a long-sleeved T-shirt, a wide-brimmed hat or a cap, and long cotton pants. Such outfit will keep your children comfortable, cool and protected from the sun and ticks. If possible, bring a spare T-shirt and extra layers in case suddenly it gets chilly.
- Backpack Carrier
One of the most important kids travel accessories is a backpack carrier. No matter you`re going to take an infant on a hike or your 4-year-old child, you should bring this hiking must have! Such carrier will comfortable and useful for both a baby and parent.
- Map, Flashlight and Batteries
You must be prepared for anything! Your mobile phone may not have service or your GPS may stop working. Well, make sure you know where you`re going.
- Entertaining Activities
Hiking can be a bit boring for your children, especially at the beginning. To keep their interest, you can not only play different hiking games or tell them interesting stories, you can also pack a small notebook and colored pencils if your kids like drawing or take the binoculars to maximize views.
- Have Your Camera Ready
Don`t miss any magic moment while hiking with your kids. Be ready to take photos of some amazing natural moments that tell the story of your family adventure.
Well, your time on the trail with children can be a great adventure for your family. All you need to do is be well prepared for such a challenging trip and be sure that your little hikers will make this camping really memorable and very funny!

Snacks! Seriously, it’s all about the snacks and some extra water too. Even if they don’t normally drink water, they may want some when hiking and going home because you don’t have any is certainly not ideal
