This time of year I feel that I am always slacking on working with my kids on educational concepts. I try searching the internet but then I feel overwhelmed with the amount of information out there. I also try to limit my kids screen time because we know it is not an effective teaching tool. Not only is it hurting them but it doesn’t prepare them for pre-school and/or Kindergarten. I love that Playroom Prep is an easy and engaging activity book that my kids and I can work on together without feeling overwhelmed and staring at a screen.
Mary Ann Kemp, a Chicago based-teacher and her daughter Rosalyn (mother of two small children) created Playroom Prep, an innovative new, hands-on, dry-erase, activity book designed for one-on-one use between an adult and a child. After realizing that her students were unprepared for the first day of class, Mary Ann designed the activity book out of necessity, which combines proven research methods with bright, colorful illustrations. This resulted in an effective teaching tool that is fun, age appropriate and encourages families to unplug and play together.
The Playroom Prep activity book is easy to use and features simple instructions that detail suggested practices that reinforces discussion and practice. Each activity follows a set sequence: the adult demonstrates, the child and the adult try together and the child repeats the steps alone. As a result,
Playroom Prep helps cultivate:
-Concentration
-Fine motor skills
-Letter sounds
-Writing skills
-Important face-time with mom or dad
My son was so excited to get started with Playroom Prep. We received Section One which works on letters B, L, R, S and T. He used a crayon to trace. Then he could easily wipe off with a cloth so his sister could have a turn.
A prep plan is at the back of the book. It is a great way to visually see a plan of activities. My son then could color the star if he accomplished that day’s activities. I no longer have to worry about when I am going to work on a certain activity it is all mapped out for me.
My son is recognizing his letters and working on handwriting all without turning on the screen. For an extra bonus he gets his parents to work alongside with him.
Playroom Prep is available on Amazon and at Playroom Prep for $18.99.
