It’s hard to believe that my little girls will be going into Kindergarten this fall! They are such fun, sassy and clever little girls! They are always wanting to learn – when their big brother has homework, they want to do homework too. Olivia is already having me quiz her with addition problems! Kids are born ready to learn, as parents we just have to teach them!
LUME Institute in St. Louis
St. Louis, have you heard of the LUME Institute? Their mission is to transform the way families, educators, and communities inspire young children to learn, grow, and thrive. They believe the power to change society lies in changing the way young children are taught. Each of their programs reflects the LUME Approach, a transformative model for high quality early childhood care and education. Through their programming, they provide educators, families, and community members the skills, support, and resources they need to successfully prepare children for life.
- LUME offers the following programs:
- Professional Development for educators to help prepare their students for success in the classroom and in life.
- Family Education and resources that support healthy relationships between parents/caregivers and children that will last a lifetime.
- Community Engagement through relationships and partnership opportunities that encourage critical conversations and action to improve child development, educational policies and initiatives across the St. Louis region and beyond.
- Workforce Development with our Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program that places unemployed and underemployed workers on a career pathway in Early Childhood Education.
LUME has partnered with Vroom and is empowering parents and caregivers to play a proactive role in children’s early brain development.
Vroom
I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I have Pinterest boards and bookmarks dedicated to fun learning activities to do with my kids. All of these great ideas but a lot of times I’ll save them and then forget to come back to them later. That’s why I am loving Vroom, a free, easy-to-use app with learning tips for children 5 and under!
Did you know that the brain grows the fastest between the ages of birth and 5? 90% of the brain is developed by the time they are ready to head to Kindergarten. That’s why it’s so important to have them start learning from birth. The Vroom app helps you give your kids a strong start in life in such an easy way.
How the Vroom App Works
The Vroom app will provide you with daily tips on how to easily add learning to your daily routine. Vroom tips add learning to mealtime, bathtime, bedtime, or anytime. You’ll get tips chosen for your child’s age and you can explore tons of tips and find ones that are just right for your family.
I downloaded the Vroom app on my iPhone and started setting it up. Since I have two 5 year old’s, I was able to add both of them to the app so I could keep track of the different learning activities we were doing. I could even take pictures or share what we were up to on social media!
The first activity that came up was cooking in the kitchen. My girls love to help cook so I knew we could do this right away! They actually love helping me make eggs but it never occurred to me to ask them some questions about the mixing and cooking process. I loved seeing their brains thinking in a new way as they made guesses!
You’ll receive your daily reminders when you sign up for them but you can also discover other learning activities to do with your children. What’s so great is that there is brain science behind EVERY Vroom tip and each one encourages 5 actions that are key for brain building: Look, Follow, Chat, Take Turns, Stretch.
My girls are always wanting to do stuff together so I love that this app gives me activity ideas – and I LOVE that I know my girls are learning as we do them too. My girls are so curious and they laughed and loved answering the questions that I asked them while we did our brain activities.
Vroom is a nationwide initiative that provides free, easy-to-use learning tips for children 5 and under. Vroom was developed with leaders in neuroscience, psychology, behavior economics, parenting and early childhood development. Their work, along with input from parents and caregivers, informs Vroom tips along with the brainy background. It’s easy to help build your child’s brain with the Vroom app!
The Vroom app is available on both iOS and Android and in English and Spanish. Parents, download the Vroom app and you’ll love these fun daily activities!
