I’ve used many video monitors over the years and I have to say: VTech has hit a HOME RUN with this one! It has ALL the functionality I’ve been missing in other monitors. It grows with you, the parent. Let me explain. When my first son was very small, he slept in our room, in a bassinet, touching the bed, with my hand on his chest making sure he was breathing. For five months. I crammed all 28 inches of his five month body into that itty bitty bassinet for as long as possible. Then we moved him (the HORROR) across our bedroom to a full size crib, a huge step for this overprotective mom.
Once we moved him into his own room at six months, I will never forget that first night when I held the video receiver IN MY HAND while I slept (one eye open), with the volume blaring so I could hear every breath. It was zoomed in so I could see his chest rise and fall. I needed that reassurance. You can have that with the ! The zoom function is fantastic and your baby is there in beautiful color if the room has light, or in black and white if the room is dark. You can hear everything, see everything. There are bells and whistles and configurations that you think you’ll never need, until…
Fast forward a few months…. Your baby or babies are a little older (or you are on your second or third) and you no longer need to respond to every whimper. You’ve gotten accustomed to a mostly full night’s sleep or maybe you are sleep training, but whatever the reason, those little noises don’t make you jump out of your skin and bed and race to the nursery. You can set the monitor’s sensitivity level wherever you’d like (LOW for me) and the volume however you want (OFF for me) and the Parent Unit stays dark until audio is captured at the sensitivity level you have set. Our nighttime Parent Unit screen comes on only if the baby is making noise as picked up by the predetermined sensitivity level. It’s amazing.
The camera also pans across the room, which can come in handy (especially later when you have a toddler in a toddler bed to track around the room!). A huge gripe I’ve had with monitors in the past is the extremely slow pan across the room – it would NOT keep up with my son! This camera is SO fast, I felt like it was going to fly off the bookshelf where I had it sitting! It’s fantastic.
There are also alarms you can set. I use the Temperature sensor and alarm because our daughter’s room can get a little cold. I can set it so an alarm rings if her room gets below 68 or above 78. This is a great feature I’ve found to be extremely useful. We’ve also used the Talk-Back Intercom button to communicate parent to parent while someone attending to the baby (I won’t say which one of us) who doesn’t know HIS or her way around the nursery and might need some help. You can also use it to reassure your baby or sing a lullaby (that would just scare mine, so I don’t sing on the monitor, LOL).
The Parent Unit is a nice small size (it’s smaller than my Galaxy S4) with a kickstand and an adjustable antenna! We get perfection reception without the antenna even though our daughter is on another floor and in the room farthest away from ours. We have had issues with interference and crackling with our old monitors, NONE with the VTech.
Do you have more than one child? The Safe & Sound™ Pan & Tilt Full Color Video Baby Monitor supports viewing of up to 8 total cameras from one parent unit. Viewing modes include single view (one camera only), split view (cycles through cameras on single view before stopping on split view) and patrol mode (single view that transitions to a different camera every 7 seconds)!

This looks like a great monitor! I’ve thought about getting one for when I babysit my sisters 9 month old and 3 year old at the same time because soetimes the baby falls asleep and the 3 year old wants to play in another room with me.

I could really use one of these monitors in my youngest grandson’s room! I love that it shows up in color on the screen!

Loving this monitor. I have the old fashioned one that works great but I would love to be able to peek in on my youngest to check on him. Thanks for sharing.

I could have really used one of those when my kids were younger! That would have saved me countless trips upstairs to peek in on them.

We love this monitor! We put it in the playroom to keep an eye on the kids.

We actually have had this monitor for a bit and I love it. The clarity of the monitor and camera are great, and it gives me peace of mind about my daughter playing in her room when I’m not in there with her.

We don’t have little ones to monitor around here anymore, but that sure is leaps and bounds better than the monitor we had for our daughter 17 years ago.

Oh my gosh, that’s hilarious! I wasn’t thaaaat bad, but I did wake my baby up a bunch to make sure he was still alive. I’m onto #4 now and I’m nothing like the new mommie me in that regard. LOL.

This looks so awesome!!! If I was a parent, I would be sure to get one!

That sounds like a brilliant monitor! Technology has changed so much in the almost-5 years that my daughter has been with us. I’ll admit to still wanting a monitor to keep an eye on her, though 😉

This looks like a great camera. I had to go out and buy one the first week my daughter was born. I thought I could do without it but I couldn’t. The peace of mind is well worth it!
