When Hayden was about two years old, I had to get an oil change for my car before we left on a trip. Not thinking, I went to where I’ve always gone, bringing Hayden with me sans stroller. After we walked in and I gave my information to the desk, I quickly realized my mistake. I had 30-45 minutes to kill in a dirty waiting room with one old television turned to the Price is Right. Sure, I had toys and snacks in my diaper bag to entertain Hayden but he wanted to run and explore the waiting room. No way! After that experience, I quickly started bringing my car to the Walmart Automotive Care Centers and have been for the last 5 years.
Walmart Automotive Care Centers are the perfect place for parents to go for oil changes {or new tires as I’ve done before!}. While your car is being worked on, you’re able to grab a bite to eat, get some grocery shopping AND other shopping done and more. Not only does it save you time, it saves you money.
We have a road trip coming up plus this winter has been pretty hard on my van, so I knew it was time to get to Walmart for an oil change. Walmart makes it really easy – just park your car and head inside to the Automotive Care Center. Dropping it off and talking to the technician was fast and easy. They had my information already and he went over the different options of oil changes, which are:
- Conventional Motor Oil – A traditional oil base, fortified with Active Cleaning Agents™ to continuously prevent dirt and contaminants from creating performance-robbing deposits.
- High Mileage Vehicle – Helps to reduce leaks and oil consumption in worn or higher mileage engines. It’s a motor oil that is specifically designed for new or late model vehicles with over 75,000 miles, to help keep the engines running clean and going strong for a long time.
- Platinum (synthetic motor oil) – Best cleanliness and protection in the Pennzoil line-up. With PurePlus™ Technology, the Platinum® motor oil is proven to keep pistons up to 40% cleaner than the toughest industry standard. PurePlus™ Technology is a revolutionary process that converts natural gas into a 99.5% pure base oil.
I’ve gone for the conventional motor oil before but this time, I decided to get the High Mileage Vehicle oil change since our van just hit 75,000 miles and we were going on a long road trip. I chose Pennzoil since their oils help clean out sludge lesser oils leave behind. Plus, Pennzoil is designed for complete protection and will allow you to drive an extra of 550 miles per year vs. a dirty engine.
Pennzoil also offers a free warranty that covers 15 engine parts that may fail due to engine wear or which experience abnormal wear due to friction.
They were pretty busy so the wait was going to be about an hour which was no problem. I had a long list of things I needed to pick up, plus since I had Hayden with me I knew he would want to spend some time in the toy department.
After Hayden showed me EVERYTHING that he wanted for his birthday, he proclaimed that he was hungry. Luckily, our Walmart has a Subway so we sat down for some lunch. I also love that Walmart has a hot case so you could even grab food from there to eat while you’re waiting.
After lunch, I was able to pick up some groceries and other healthcare essentials. Then we walked around the whole store and checked out everything from clothing to furniture. You might be wondering how I would know that my car was ready? The technician will give you this little slip of paper that you can scan at any price checker throughout the store. It will let you know exactly where your car is – whether it’s in the bay or the job is complete!
Once the oil change was done,we were ready to go. If I have a big shopping trip, I’ll check out up front at the lanes, but if I don’t have too much I will have them check me out back in the Automotive Care Center so I can buy everything at once.
They gave me a sheet that went over everything they did to my car which I appreciated – it’s a good thing to keep in your glove compartment! Check out all that is included in an oil change – I really appreciate the vacuuming. 🙂
And just so you don’t forget when your next oil change is AND what kind of oil was used in your car, there’s a handy sticker that they affix to your windshield.
If you’re a parent with no time, the place to go for oil changes is the Walmart Automotive Care Centers! You’ll love the ability to knock several places off your list at once.

My husband takes care of all of our car stuff. Our closest Walmart does not have an auto care center, so we have never tried it.

I have never used Walmart for oil changes, but you raise a great point about why maybe I should start using them. For some reason, I have just always used some drive up place, but I love the idea of walking the stores window shopping instead of sitting in a cold, dreary waiting area of the drive up place I usually use. I am due for an oil change, I will test Walmart and see how I like them!

I miss having a Wal Mart Auto Center close. I used to take my car in , drop it off, and then head into the store to get my shopping done trip. Few hours later I was on my way. Sure made things easier.

The old school guy in me loves working on my car as much as possible, brakes and fluid changes, along with other basic repairs. I can definitely see the appeal of being able to kill two birds with one stone by dropping the car off and doing shopping at the same time.

Yes I have gone to walmart for car repairs before when it was just me and my husband wasn’t around to fix it. I find it easy because I can browse the aisles, shop, get a snack and the time passes pretty quickly!
